How to Choose the Right Care For You at the Right Time

How to decide whether visiting care or live-in care is the right choice for you.

If you’ve already decided that you don’t want to spend your twilight years in a care home then you’re not alone. A One Poll study in 2014 featured in the 2019 Better At Home report said that over 97% of people don’t want to go into a care home and 71% would prefer to spend their last few days at home. There’s no doubt that care at home promotes independence and allows you to stay at home in the place you love.

Unfortunately, decisions about care tend to come when we least expect it, following a fall requiring hospitalisation or the illness of a family carer, so it’s important that you and your family know the type of home care you would like to receive.

Visiting care

Most people think of visiting care when they think of care at home. Here at Care in my home our visiting care is provided by trained carers who visit a number of different service users per day with each visit lasting between 30 minutes and an hour. The times are of the calls are usually scheduled at the same time each day and the care provided centres around a personalised care plan which details the specific care that you should receive each day.

For example, you might have a visit four times a day for an hour each time. In the first visit your carer would help you dress and prepare breakfast, the second visit would be to prepare lunch, the third to prepare your dinner and the last visit to help you get ready for bed.

Visiting care allows you to be as independent as you want to be, with only minimal interruption to your life. There’s no need to alter your home to accommodate the carer and you know exactly the times at which the care will be provided

All visiting carers work on a rota basis so will care for a number of different people per day. Although every effort is made to keep the number of your care team low, you will be cared for by different carers on some of the care visits, who all know your likes and dislikes and will form a great relationship with you.

Visiting care might not be for you if:

  • You still live a very active life and dislike your day being structured around the care visits.
  • You need more care than the scheduled visits allow for and are worried about being in the house alone.
  • You would like your care to be more flexible so you receive care exactly when you want it and how you want it on a day to day basis.
  • You would like your carer to accompany you on holidays and outdoor visits.

Live-in Care.

Live-in care does exactly what it says it does, the carer will live with you, in your home and care for you throughout the day and night providing round the clock care and companionship.

Live-in care is the most flexible care package available and at Care in my home we match our live-in carers to your personality to ensure that you receive a companion as well as a carer. Our live-in carers will drive you to activities, take care of your pet and care for you when you need it, no matter what the time of day. With live-in care there is no rigid structure and the day can be planned around your wishes and routines.

Live- in Care might not be for you if:

  • You value your privacy and don’t want someone constantly with you.
  • You don’t have extra room in your home to accommodate the carer who will need their own bedroom with a lockable door and privacy on their breaks.

Care in my home provides exceptional visiting and live-in care to enable you to live life on your terms. If you’re still undecided on the right care for you then contact us on 0300 124 0442 and we’ll be more than happy to discuss care options with you.
